Good article...but it really doesn't tell the story. With the system that was put in place by the "Father of the National Debt", Alexander Hamilton in 1791...we were doomed as a nation from that time on. Hamilton wrote: "A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be a national blessing; a powerful cement of union; a necessity for keeping up taxation, and a spur to industry." Excessive is where we are, taxation is excessive...in 1914, W.Wilson signed in the "Federal Reserve Act" which completely pulled the USA into a system that is a disaster. The war fought now is not about oil, but about the almighty dollar that is nearly worthless.
Saddam wanted to trade in Euros instead of dollars which would have collapsed the USA...thus a war to protect the almighty dollar. Should Japan, China, Mexico, decide to call in the debt the USA owes them, or trade in Euros...it will bring us to our knees in a day. Economist are right in trying to bring our national debt under control, but it won't matter who is in office, republican or democrat (even though both parties tell us they have an answer)...it will never happen being under a system that chooses to live beyond the means of it's actual production of goods...This is not a blessing as Hamilton stated, but a curse of our own greed...It is all about $$$$!! Scary?? you bet! I'm not looking forward to the day when it all falls down!

I was recently at a funeral conducted by no less than three country Baptist preachers. Although things never really got out of hand--as they easily might have--one said the war in Iraq was not about oil but about Jesus Christ. I think you're lots more better on being right about the $.

Like America itself, Hamilton's idea probably looked good on paper. Then again, even though they had their own scandals and foolish behavior, I don't know that any of the founding folks could have envisioned the low point to which today's leadership has brought us.

History shows us that corruption, greed, pride, and stupidity is the natural order of man. The nations destroy themselves by its undying love of self. Until we submit to God as a nation and as individuals...we will never achieve anything more than what has been created by the foolishness of man.
